چکیده

We present the results of ROSAT and XMM-Newton observations of the recurrent ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) NGC 253 ULX1. This transient is one of the few ULXs that was detected during several outbursts. The luminosity reached 1.4×1039 erg s−1 and 0.5×1039 erg s−1 in the detections by ROSAT and XMM-Newton, respectively, indicating a black hole X-ray binary (BHXRB) with a mass of the compact object of ≥11 M⊙. In the ROSAT detection NGC 253 ULX1 showed significant variability, whereas the luminosity was constant in the detection from XMM-Newton. The XMM-Newton EPIC spectra are well-fit by a bremsstrahlung model (kT= 2.24 keV, NH = 1.74×1020 cm−2), which can be used to describe a comptonized plasma. No counterpart was detected in the optical I, R, B, NUV and FUV bands to limits of 22.9, 24.2, 24.3, 22 and 23 mag, respectively, pointing at a XRB with a low mass companion.

The Ultra Luminous X - ray sources in the High Velocity System of NGC 1275

We report the results of a study of X-ray point sources coincident with the High Velocity System (HVS) projected in front of NGC 1275. A very deep X-ray image of the core of the Perseus cluster made with the Chandra Observatory has been used. We find a population of Ultra-Luminous X-ray sources (ULX; 7 sources with L X (0.5 − 7.0 keV) > 7 × 10 39 erg s −1). As with the ULX populations in the An...

A variable ultra - luminous X - ray source in the colliding galaxy NGC 7714

We studied the colliding galaxy NGC 7714 with two XMM-Newton observations, six months apart. The galaxy contains two bright X-ray sources: we show that they have different physical nature. The off-nuclear source is an accreting compact object, one of the brightest ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) found to date. It showed spectral and luminosity changes between the two observations, from a low...

The 0.3–30 Kev Spectra of Powerful Starburst Galaxies: Nustar and Chandra Observations of Ngc

We present nearly simultaneous Chandra and NuSTAR observations of two actively star-forming galaxies within 50 Mpc: NGC 3256 and NGC 3310. Both galaxies are significantly detected by both Chandra and NuSTAR, which together provide the first-ever spectra of these two galaxies spanning 0.3–30 keV. The X-ray emission from both galaxies is spatially resolved by Chandra; we find that hot gas dominat...

Constraints on accretion in Ultraluminous X-ray Sources from Spitzer IRS observations of NGC 4485/90: Infrared diagnostic diagrams

Constraining the astrophysical nature of Ultra-Luminous X-ray (ULX) sources, which have X-ray luminosities exceeding 10 erg s, has been elusive due to the optical faintness of any counterparts. With high spectral resolution observations in the ∼ 10–30μm wavelength range we have conducted an experiment to study six ULX sources in the NGC 4485/90 galaxy pair. We have found that five of the six UL...

An Unusual Spectral State of an Ultra-luminous Very Soft X-ray Source during Outburst

We report the results of Chandra and XMM-Newton observations of a new outburst of an ultra-luminous Xray source in M101. During a Chandra monitoring observation of M101, M101 ULX-1 was found to be in outburst in 2004 December, the second outburst in 2004. The peak bolometric luminosity is about 3×1040 ergs s−1 (7× 1039 ergs s−1 in 0.3–7 keV). The outburst spectra are very soft and can generally...
